New York Jets Both Lucky and Good

The Jets went into Cincinnati last Saturday having spent as much time defending their Wild Card position as they had preparing for the game, itself. Blasted for having punched their ticket through the generosity of the Bengals and Indianapolis Colts; two teams with nothing to play for that had virtually rolled over and played dead for Gang Green in the season’s final two games, the Jets took the field with a little something more at stake than just a playoff game. They wanted to prove they belonged.

And prove it they did, behind Mark Sanchez’s best contest of the season. They sent the Bengals home for the winter in a performance that, while not as dominating as the previous week’s, saw them control every facet of the game from start to finish. Head Coach Rex Ryan had raised more than a few eyebrows with some of his pre game statements; like calling his Jets the Super Bowl favorites, but his charges made him look like a prophet, for the first round at least, and have some thinking that maybe Ryan is crazy like a fox.

While the Jets are still the longest of long shots, there is a budding sense among players and fans alike that something special could actually happen. Cursed for most of their existence by some of the most excruciating losses and disappointments the NFL has seen, these Jets have actually had the breaks go their way over the last month. Their late season matchups with Indy and Cincy could not have been better timed, the myriad of teams that needed to lose in order for the Jets to advance did just that, there could not have been a better first round matchup than the one they drew with the Bengals and, finally, Baltimore’s rout of New England brought a second round tilt with San Diego; a daunting foe, indeed, but a far more favorable opponent than Peyton Manning and the Colts. Are these guys really the Jets?

The one thing Big Rexy and his boys need to guard against, however, is the idea that they’re now playing with house money; as if last week’s win validated a successful season and whatever happens next doesn’t matter. While each of those points is true, to a degree, the NFL offers a very small window for teams chasing a title. No matter how young, no matter how talented, franchises can never be sure how many opportunities they’ll get for championship glory. The Jets should know this better than any as their Super Bowl drought is longer than every team but the Detroit Lions and is marred by missed field goals, snapped Achilles tendons and muddy fields. Ryan has given every indication that he’ll keep his foot on the gas pedal and his team’s confidence seems to be growing because of it. Now, let’s see how much of the newfound good fortune they can transport to San Diego.

Open Mouth, Insert Foot

In the aftermath of the Jets’ first round victory came the post game comments of SNY commentator Adam Schein and WFAN host Mike Francesa. Schein, on the SNY post game show Saturday night, came down very hard on punter Steve Weatherford, who was held out of the game due to illness, according to the team. Schein, who gives no impression of ever having worn a football helmet, questioned Weatherford’s character; stating that the illness had better be serious. The Jets would later reveal that Weatherford had been diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat, something he’ll need to have surgically corrected in the off season.

That revelation did nothing to dissuade Francesa, who went down the same path Sunday morning, only to be corrected by a colleague. That he was unaware that the punter’s condition had been made public the night before is not surprising as his indifference is exceeded only by his arrogance. Each of these gas bags missed what was obvious to most: that since Weatherford was, in fact, on the sideline and in uniform, his condition must have been very serious for the Jets to hold him out of the game. But, hey, why let the facts get in the way of sounding like a big, tough ballplayer?

NCAA Basketball Shill Vitale Loses Credibility

After thirty years, it’s time for ESPN’s lead hypocrite, Dick Vitale, to pack up his self-proclaimed “one eyed ziggy” act and go away forever. While it’s always been difficult to stomach the superfluous nonsense he spews during his network’s broadcasts, he now regularly ignores and, in fact, rewrites the history of the coaches and programs whose fannies he chooses to smooch.

During Tuesday’s matchup of Florida and Kentucky, Vitale went into a rant about Mark McGwire, repeating what he’d said that morning on “Mike and Mike”. He used the term “cheater” numerous times, referring to how sick he was of the steroid mess in baseball and how he sought refuge by talking up the game between the Wildcats and Gators. A game that, incidentally, featured one of the college game’s more infamous cheaters, John Calipari, who’d been identified as such just weeks before by Vitale’s ESPN colleague, Bob Knight. Not surprisingly, Vitale chose to ignore the issue. Not only was much of the telecast filled with Vitale’s praise for Calipari’s coaching ability, a graphic soon popped up naming the Kentucky coach as Vitale’s selection as Coach of the Year through this point in the season. Finally, he mentioned that Calipari is attempting to become only the second coach to take three teams to the Final Four. A complete rewriting of the facts, actually, as both of Calipari’s previous trips to the Championship round with UMass and Memphis have been vacated due to NCAA infractions. According to the NCAA’s own records, Calipari’s never been to a Final Four. I guess Vitale didn’t get the news. Regardless, until he’s told by ESPN to take his ball and go home; something that, unfortunately, doesn’t seem to be imminent, any game that he works will be an extremely difficult and annoying listen.

New Jersey Devils Star Toils in Virtual Anonymity

If Devils’ goalie Martin Brodeur had been as dominant over the course of his career in any other sport or for any other New York area team, there’d already be a statue of him standing in front of a stadium.

New York Knicks Haunted in Oklahoma

During their two day stay in Oklahoma City, New York Knicks forwards Eddy Curry and Jared Jefferies complained that they were unable to sleep due to the fact that their hotel, The Skirvin, is haunted by ghosts. I’ll leave you to your own punchlines.

Mark McGwire’s Weak Apology Does Settle One Score

Why would we have expected anything different from Mark McGwire? Why would we think that, unlike all of the other steroid cheats who have come forward, sort of, that he’d be the one to completely open up about his own use? Sorry, wasn’t going to happen. Despite the earnest attempts of MLB Network’s Bob Costas to guide him to the full disclosure necessary for forgiveness, McGwire resisted throughout. As a result, he looked like someone who came forward only because it was a requirement for his employment with the St. Louis Cardinals. However, despite the fact that we learned very little that we didn’t already suspect, McGwire inadvertently settled one major debate about himself.

Forget his ridiculous assertions that the steroids were low dosage, that they did nothing to improve his performance or that he always wanted to come forward about his use of PED’s. It’s all nonsense. Focus, instead, on his admission that, due to his frustration with chronic injury, he decided against retirement and started using steroids in 1996 to help him overcome his physical woes and get back on the field. By that very statement, he is also confirming that in no way does he deserve to be considered for the Hall of Fame.

Prior to the ’96 season, McGwire had posted 220 HR and 657 RBI over his first ten seasons; a far cry from consideration for the Hall. He had appeared in just 74 games over the previous two seasons, prompting his thoughts of retirement. In 1996, however, McGwire embarked on a four year slugfest that saw him launch an inhuman 245 home runs. So, if we connect the dots, what McGwire actually told Costas was that, had it not been for steroids, he’d have retired with the 220 dingers that would have left him off of every voter’s ballot.

Baseball is a game in which cheating has long been revered. Hitters cork their bats while teams grow the grass high to aid slow infielders and water down the dirt to foil basestealers. The 1951 Giants won a pennant aided by an employee in the scoreboard stealing the other team’s signs, journeyman pitcher Mike Scott won a Cy Young by scuffing the ball and spitballer Gaylord Perry has a plaque in Cooperstown. Oddly, fans and players alike look at these indiscretions with a kind of twisted admiration. To that end, baseball got exactly what it asked for with these steroid cheats. I just wish they’d have a little more respect for our intelligence when they come forward and not hand us the ridiculous crap that we saw from McGwire on Monday.

Washington Wizards' teammates Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittendon are alleged to have drawn guns on each other in the Wizards' locker room over a gambling debt; something Arenas has confirmed. Apparently, it was Arenas' idea of some sort of prank. He's been suspended indefinitely as D.C. police continue to investigate.

Jets Say Farewell To Giants Stadium Demons At Cincinnati’s Expense

It was right out of Meadowlands history. The former defensive coordinator turned head coach brandishing a style of smash-mouth football behind a dominating offensive line and a punishing defense on a cold, windswept December evening. A raucous crowd firing up the home team on its way to a playoff berth and a shot at the Super Bowl. Only, this time, it wasn’t Bill Parcells leading the Giants during their heyday. Instead, the New York Jets; yes, those Jets, turned in the kind of dominating performance their fans hadn’t seen since Klecko and Mehl hung up their cleats all those years ago. Behind first year Head Coach Rex Ryan, who, himself, had given them up for dead just two weeks earlier, Gang Green turned the final game at Giants Stadium into a coming-out party for what many hope to be a new era for the Jets. That it took twenty five years to get here didn’t seem to bother any of the faithful Sunday night.

While many have pointed to the Jets’ good fortune in facing two teams, (Indianapolis and Cincinnati), with no motivation, Big Rexy’s boys will offer no apologies as participants in the Super Bowl tournament. Even though it’s a long shot to think they would have beaten the Colts had Peyton Manning and Company turned in a full day’s work, the Bengals absolutely came to play last week until their spirit was broken by the suffocating Jets’ defense in the first quarter. Carson Palmer was an abysmal 1 for 11 and the former Chad Johnson couldn’t catch a cold. Instead, the Jets dominated every facet of the game behind the tried and true formula for playoff success: Rushing and Defense. Piling up 257 yards on the ground while allowing just 61 bodes well for New York in this week’s rematch. Cincinnati can take heart in that they’ll be welcoming back a number of starters but, unless their names are Unitas and Butkus, it may not be enough.

New York Giants Shame Their Own Tradition

At the beginning of the season, who’d have believed that the unyielding and overpowering shutout to close Giants Stadium would be turned in by the Jets while the Meadowlands’ main tenants went meekly into the off-season?

The type of performance given by the Giants over the last two weeks is one that surfaces every year. At the end of each season, we see teams quit on their teammates, coaches and fans; embarrassing themselves professionally in the process. That, this time, it occurred with a team on the brink of the playoffs and just two years removed from a Super Bowl title is as amazing as it is sad.

Big Blue’s total lack of effort in being outscored 85-16 over its final two games is a sign that a huge overhaul is necessary. The process started Monday with the firing of Defensive Coordinator, Bill Sheridan but should not include, for now, the Head Coach. What Tom Coughlin needs to realize, however, is that, somewhere along the way, he’s picked up a number of whiners and weak links that need to be banished no matter what their previous record of success. Blind loyalty for past achievements is a potent formula for getting yourself fired. He can start with DE Osi Umenyiora, who got into it with Sheridan during training camp, went home for a nap and a ba-ba and was awful, thereafter. The Jints have enough talent to rebound in 2010. However, with two playoff teams already in the division and Mike Shanahan arriving in Washington, they’d better be quick about it.

Magic Johnson Denied Courtside Seats By New York Knicks

The New York Daily News reported that NBA legend Magic Johnson had his request for complimentary tickets denied by Knicks’ brass; reportedly due to critical comments Johnson made about former Knicks’ boss, Isiah Thomas. Based on that, I’m wondering how anyone gets in the building.

NBA Commish Must Ban Arenas For Life

Washington Wizards’ teammates Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittendon are alleged to have drawn guns on each other in the Wizards’ locker room over a gambling debt; something Arenas has confirmed. Apparently, it was Arenas’ idea of some sort of prank. He’s been suspended indefinitely as D.C. police continue to investigate.

There is no gray area here for Commissioner David Stern as to his course of action. This was no courtside melee that spilled into the stands and endangered ticket holders; something for which Ron Artest lost a season. This was a real, live, life-or-death situation created by two idiots with no regard for the value of a dollar, let alone a life. How would you like to be the clubhouse guy for Washington? Young guy, going about your business and all of a sudden you’re in the middle of a shootout. Think I’m exaggerating? Once you’ve actually become unbalanced enough to draw the weapon, how far, actually, is the next step to fire it?

The NBA averted the worst event in its history by an eyelash. Should Arenas or Crittendon be allowed back, the league will be as culpable as the players when, not if, it happens again. Sadly ironic that it happened with the Wizards, a team whose name was changed from the Bullets because its late owner, Abe Pollin, was concerned about the violent image the name projected among D.C. youth.

NFL Playoff Predictions

Green Bay 31 Arizona 23: Bobby Carr, Joe Berg and Lynn Dickey rejoice.
Dallas 27 Philadelphia 13: Tell your father-in-law to kiss your arse, young Flanagan.
Patriots 26 Ravens 21: Is there any way both teams can lose? Won’t even watch this game.
Bengals 17 Jets 9: Condolences to Lou Ricciardi, Jack O’Sullivan and Mike Walsh.

By Eddie Mayrose

New York Mets GM Omar Minaya Feeling The Heat
In the middle of a week that saw John Lackey sign with the Red Sox and Roy Halladay traded to the Phillies, Omar Minaya has taken his share of pounding in the media for failing to do anything to improve the Metropolitan Baseball club. Made me think I missed an announcement that had Major League Baseball awarding a championship in December without playing a regular season schedule. Minaya offered little more than a request for patience; explaining that the Mets do have a plan and they’re content to let it run its course.

One thing in the GM’s favor is that three superstars; Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran and Johan Santana will be returning to the roster. The presence of Reyes and Beltran in the lineup should serve to boost David Wright’s stats back to their normal range. While the Amazins’ desperately need starting pitching and failed to bring either Halladay or Lackey into the fold, Minaya does hve a little credit in the bank when it comes to preaching patience. He outlasted all contenders in free agent negotiations with Beltran and Pedro Martinez and gave up next to nothing to acquire Santana after waiting out the Red Sox and Yankees.

Fans and media alike are calling for any kind of deal as if the Mets are obligated to provide some show of good faith. They’ve already offered Jason Bay a four year deal but won’t go for five. Good for them. Putting fanatacism aside, does anyone really think Jason Bay will be worth $16 million in five years? If Minaya can ship Luis Castillo out of CitiField for Orlando Hudson, sign Bay and bring in one or two mid level starters (Ben Sheets, Justin Duchscherrer), he’ll be heading into 2010 with a very similar roster to the one that was picked by many to win the NL East in 2009.

Listen To Your Father, Kid. New York Jets December Preview
Have to admit I received the following preview of the Jets’ stretch run from Cheap Seater Keith Whelan with more than a little satisfaction. My attempt to educate fans of Gang Green to the presence of outside forces dedicated to their demise has started to hit home. Whelan, a long time season ticket holder, offered this opinion on how his favorite team would finish the season.

“It’s just too easy to expect the Jets to break our hearts again. We all know they will. But, now, I’ve taken your advice to go beyond the pessimistic view and look for the twisted one that will not only hurt but pour salt in the wound.” “The way I see it, we’ll easily beat Atlanta this week while Miami, Baltimore and Jacksonville lose. That puts us a game up and in control of our own fate; a very bad sign.” “We’ll head to Indy next week and shock everyone by knocking off the unbeaten Colts as they rest players.” “Then, facing a ‘win and we’re in’ game at home, we’ll be crushed by Cincinnati. They’ve hurt me too many times for me to see this thing turning out any other way.”

Nice job, Keith. The only thing I might add is a few Patriots’ losses that will have that Cincinnati defeat cost them the division as well. So, if you’re torn between holiday commitments and watching the Jets, it’s been our pleasure to free you up for some parties and shopping.

Russian Billionaire Takes Control of New Jersey Nets
Nets’ owner Bruce Ratner announced that an agreement has been reached with Mikhail Prokhorov regarding his stake in the Nets franchise and the proposed arena in Brooklyn. The final hurdle is approval by the remaining NBA owners who have already indicated they’d sign off on the deal. No decision has been reached on Prokhorov’s request that the Nets be allowed to play with seven men on the court and shoot at a nine foot basket.

Hey, Giants Football Fans, Come In Off The Ledge
While Sunday night’s loss to Philadelphia probably cost Big Blue any chance of winning the NFC East, the Giants still find themselves in the driver’s seat for a Wild Card berth. Yes, I know the defense was terrible; allowing back breaking plays at the end of the firat half and then, again, after the Jints had finally taken the lead. Yet, regardless of how the D performed, the Giants still win that game if not for the two TD returns allowed on a fumble recovery and a punt. Hang tough, Giants’ fans. A 9-7 record is easily attainable and more than likely secures the postseason for your football team. Refresh my memory. How’d the Giants do the last time they were a 9-7 Wild Card team?

Tiger Woods Named AP Athlete of the Decade
For the first time in three weeks, Tiger Woods got a little good news when he was named AP Athlete of the Decade. Obvious jokes aside, Woods’ selection was as easy as you’ll see with an award so open to different interpretations. Interesting to guess where Tiger would have finished had the vote been taken after Thanksgiving, though. After all, Barry Bonds, four time MVP, batting champ and all time Home Run leader didn’t garner a single vote. Wonder why?

Dallas Cowboys Football Stadium Debuts 3D Screen
So I’m watching Chargers-Cowboys in Jerry Jones’ brand new palace last Sunday. CBS fulfilled what seems like a contractual obligation by extolling the virtues of the new stadium ad nauseum. There were views of the promenade, the enormous standing room area, six or seven thousand shots of Jones in his luxury box and, of course, many references to the enormous video screen that hangs over the field. Now, I find that a video screen in a stadium is quite useful for replays; after all, it’s the one concession you make to television when you attend a game in person. However, I’ve never seen the logic of broadcasting the game as it’s being played. Why would anyone pay good money for a ticket to, essentially, enjoy less comfort for an activity that could have been enjoyed at home for free?

Be that as it may, the ‘Pokes went over the top with an “Emperor’s New Clothes” feature that really gave me a laugh. At one point in the game, we were shown an image of a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader wearing a pair of 3D glasses. Apparently, Jones and the Cowboys were quite impressed with themselves for showing a three dimensional view of the game on the giant screen. Fans seemed very excited about it, too. Wonder if any of them realized that, along with the fans assembled in every other NFL stadium, they were already enjoying a 3D version of the game by simply looking down at the field. Somewhere, P.T. Barnum must have been smiling.

Mayrose Honored
Congratulations to Virginia Mayrose, Staten Island High School Volleyball Coach of the Year. Recognized for leading St. Joseph Hill Academy to its first title since she founded the program, Mayrose completely revamped her team’s style of play; raising the competitive bar in her own league while bolstering the reputation of Staten Island volleyball among the more established schools in New York City. She’s really cute, too. Well done, Gin.

Tiger Woods Dealing With Unplayable Lie

Is it possible to blow a billion bucks in just two weeks? Tiger Woods may be in the process of answering that very question right now. Since driving into a fire hydrant on Thanksgiving night, we’ve found out a lot about how Tiger may have been entertaining himself off the course. True or not, you can bet that those sponsors that originally stood behind him are having second thoughts as each alleged dalliance is revealed. As it is, not one commercial featuring Woods has appeared in prime time since the story began. If he can’t stop the bleeding somehow, his wife and family may not be the only things he loses.

New York Knicks Sit Nate And Go On Tear
If Knicks’ head coach Mike D’Antoni does nothing else during the regular season, he’s already won me over with his benching of Nate Robinson; his super-talented and super-childish guard. Robinson is a classic case of a player that just doesn’t get it. He defended his role in a brawl with the Nuggets as a reaction to the fact that Denver was, essentially, running up the score and seeking to embarrass New York. Then, after that philosophy earned him a ten game suspension, he was lambasted by Knicks’ coach Isiah Thomas for a ridiculously comical dunk attempt in a close game that resulted in a traveling violation. Contradicting his earlier stance and showing no remorse, he claimed that, net time, he’d wait until the Knicks were up twenty before he tried it.

This season, his second under D’Antoni, Nate finally pushed too hard when he intentionally shot the ball at the wrong basket against New Jersey and spent most of the pre game warmups vs. Orlando fraternizing with his buddy, Dwight Howard. D’Antoni, having seen enough, banished Robinson to the bench and sent the 4-14 Knicks into their hottest streak of the season.

Robinson has no idea how to play a winning brand of basketball. He’s a player that thinks the outcome of a game is incidental to the way he plays, not a direct result. As such, he’s as unwatchable as any player in the league and the first guy that should be shown the door when the housecleaning begins next summer.

New York Yankees Trade for Granderson
About a year ago, the Yankees made what looked to be a safety-net type of trade with the White Sox in acquiring Nick Swisher. Swisher, who can play all three outfield positions as well as first base, provided the Bombers some protection in case they couldn’t sign Mark Teixeira. More than that, however, they’d acquired a player with a team-first mentality whose personality would be an asset to the team in the clubhouse as well as on the field. Swisher quickly became a fan favorite and flourished at the bottom of New York’s order. He was a huge part of their World Championship; a throwback who’d have been just as comfortable with Joe Torre’s Yanks as he was with Joe Girardi’s. Swisher debunked the “rotisserie baseball” style of filling out a roster that had been employed by the Yankees over the last decade and brought back some of the grinding temperament that hadn’t been seen since Paul O’Neill and Tino Martinez left town. Perhaps realizing the secret of his success, GM Brian Cashman made a similar move this week in grabbing Curtis Granderson from the Tigers. He comes to the Bronx with a better resume than Swisher but is a very similar player. Young, handsome and quick witted, he’ll be the object of fan affection the moment he steps on the field and should be equally as popular in the clubhouse. Looks like Cashman has finally realized the value of good chemistry.

Fordham Basketball Coach Whittenburg Fired
Just five games into the season, Fordham University decided to dismiss men’s basketball coach, Dereck Whittenburg. Coming off a disastrous 3-25 campaign, school athletic officials were hoping for a much better start from their Rams than four losses in the first five games. So, after a twenty four point loss to neighborhood rival, Manhattan College, Whittenburg was shown the door. Fordham announced that a national search would commence immediately.

They can look all they want, even bring back Digger Phelps; it won’t solve the biggest problem facing their basketball program. Fordham, as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, is in way over its head; a point driven home on Sunday by its former MAAC opponent, Manhattan. In the world of big-time college hoops, Fordham is a relatively small school with very little success as part of its history. They have no geographic rivals within the conference and generate little or no interest among fans in New York City. As part of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, however, they enjoyed rivalries with the aforementioned Jaspers and Iona while receiving infinitely more local coverage. You won’t see too many fans or reporters headed to Rose Hill on a cold February night for a Fordham-Saint Louis matchup. Though, on the same night, Draddy Gym will have twice as many people for a Manhattan-Iona clash. For some reason,(money), Fordham officials decided to leave the MAAC and signed on to be sacrificial lambs to the likes of A-10 powers Xavier, Dayton, St. Joseph’s, LaSalle and Temple; all programs with national reputations. To expect a head coach to compete with those teams while also fighting a recruiting war at home with six other Division I programs is asking for too much. That’s if he even chooses to fight that war in the first place.

While any coach would be behind the eight ball at Fordham, Whittenburg did have a hand in his own undoing. A perusal of the Rams’ roster shows only one player from New York City; Alberto Estwick of Brooklyn. Despite the fact that the New York Catholic High School League is considered the best in the nation, not one grad from among its members plays at Fordham. Even Estwick played in New Jersey. Legendary St. John’s coach, Lou Carnesecca, used to joke that his recruiting budget was a handful of subway tokens as his roster was made up mostly of city kids. How’d he do with that strategy? Current Johnnies’ head man, Norm Roberts, has struggled almost as much as Whittenburg in his tenure; mainly due to his inability to recruit in his own backyard. Ironically, Whittenburg’s last defeat came at the hands of Manhattan coach Barry Rohrssen, formerly Pitt’s chief recruiter who made a living bringing New York players to Pittsburgh after they were ignored by their hometown colleges. I’ve attended better than a hundred CHSAA games over the last eight years. Rohrssen is a fixture. I’ve never seen Whittenburg.

Fordham’s got a long road ahead on its way to hoop respectability; something it may never accomplish no matter how earnest the effort. The first step taken should be toward a head coach with a New York reputation who’ll bring city players to Rose Hill and start to generate interest among Big Apple hoop fans. A few regular season games at The Garden wouldn’t hurt either. Until then, however, they’re just boys among men. No matter who’s running the program.

I'm wondering just how many of those calling for Tiger Woods to come clean about the circumstances surrounding his auto accident would be so open with the authorities in the same situation. Here's what I need to know. Woods was involved in a one car accident where he was the only person injured and no alcohol was involved. He met his legal requirements by producing license, registration and proof of insurance and is recovering from minor injuries that will not affect his career. That's it, I'm good. Whatever else may have happened is the sole business of Tiger and his wife; no matter how far he can hit a golf ball. Funny, a sports superstar crashes his car and a media frenzy erupts over why it occurred. Yet, when two morons trying to get on TV commit a felony by trespassing on White House grounds and compromising Presidential security, it's received as little more than a college fraternity prank. Here's an idea. Let's cut Mr. and Mrs. Woods some slack and throw Mr. and Mrs. Salahi in prison for as long as President Obama resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Tiger Woods Drives Into The Rough

I’m wondering just how many of those calling for Tiger Woods to come clean about the circumstances surrounding his auto accident would be so open with the authorities in the same situation. Here’s all I need to know. Woods was involved in a one car accident where he was the only person injured and no alcohol was involved. He met his legal requirements by producing license, registration and proof of insurance and is recovering from minor injuries that will not affect his career. That’s it, I’m good. Whatever else may have happened is the sole business of Tiger and his wife; no matter how far he can hit a golf ball. Funny, a sports superstar crashes his car and public outrage ensues because we can’t find out why it occurred. Yet, when two morons trying to get on TV commit a felony by trespassing on White House grounds and compromising Presidential security, it’s received as little more than a college fraternity prank. Here’s an idea. Let’s cut Mr. and Mrs. Woods some slack and throw Mr. and Mrs. Salahi in prison for as long as President Obama resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

New York Rangers’ Tortorella May Be Writing Own Pink Slip

After a weekend that saw his hockey team blown out of two games while surrendering thirteen goals, Rangers’ Head Coach John Tortorella had an interesting take. “The locker room, sooner or later, has to take some ownership as far as how we’re gonna go about this,” Tortorella said. “It’s about accountability … individual players taking responsibility for their play.” Seems to me that accountability and responsibility are part of the head man’s job description; right up there with motivation. Every coach knows the game. The successful ones are those that inspire their players to compete. Could it be that Tortorella may soon be held accountable for the Blueshirts’ malaise? Then again, he’s being evaluated by GM Glen Sather; an exec that’s reigned over a decade of mediocrity while escaping any vestige of accountability, himself. Who knows? Maybe he and Tortorella are a perfect match.

Derek Jeter Named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year

This one is a little confusing. Now, a case could be made for a player of Derek Jeter’s caliber just about every year. Having said that, if SI was looking to select a baseball player based solely on his accomplishments in 2009, Albert Pujols should have been the choice. If Jeter’s exceptional season was viewed as part of a career resume that includes a number of championships, how can Lakers’ coach Phil Jackson be overlooked after setting an NBA record with his tenth title? After all, Jeter’s been with the Yanks for each of the last nine seasons that have failed to produce a title. It wasn’t until C.C. Sabathia and Mark Teixeira arrived that the Bombers were able to rise to the top of the baseball world once again. No matter your opinion, however, the editors at SI are grateful for the interest generated by any controversy. That said, the pick here would have been Jackson.

New Jersey Nets Fire Coach Lawrence Frank

There. That ought to fix everything. No word yet as to when Nets’ playoff tickets go on sale.

Tennessee Titans On Comeback Trail

This is the flip side to the New Jersey Nets situation and one for those who recognize that a great coach doesn’t suddenly become stupid. After Tennessee’s 0-6 start, some were calling for the head of Titan’s coach Jeff Fisher. Fisher, the NFL’s longest tenured head man, was under fire after his team’s disastrous opening to the ’09 campaign. Wonder if a new guy would have been able to rally the Titans back to playoff contention with a five game winning streak the way Fisher has.

McAlarney Leads Fort Wayne Mad Ants To First Victory

Fort Wayne Mad Ants? Well, it doesn’t always come easy. For every NBA star, there are a hundred scratching and clawing to get into the league. Some, like former Knick, John Starks, go from bagging groceries to the All Star Game. For many others, though, it’s a long trek through a lot of small towns that doesn’t always end with an NBA contract. Former Notre Dame star, Kyle McAlarney, is currently on the first step of that journey, toiling in the NBA Developmental League for the Mad Ants. He had twenty two the other night in the Ants’ first win as he tries to refute the notion that a player his size can’t make it. Hard to believe there isn’t a team in the NBA that couldn’t use one of the best shooters at any level. You listening, Donnie Walsh?

So, now Nets' owner Bruce Ratner wins his eminent domain battle to evict homeowners and build his Atlantic Yards empire in Brooklyn. Got news for you, Brucie.

New York Giants Owner Mara Upset About Travel

Came out this week that Giants’ owner John Mara is upset that his squad must make the two thousand mile trek to Denver for its Thanksgiving clash with the Broncos. “I don’t mind playing on Thanksgiving,” Mara said. “My complaint is sending us all the way to Denver on a short week.” In fact, he was so irked by the scheduling that he filed a complaint with the NFL; which made me wonder. Is that complaint hotline for the exclusive use of petty, carpetbagging owners that were born on third and thought they hit a triple? Or can it be used by life long season ticket holders being screwed out of their seats by Mara’s Personal Seat Licensing extortion? Sorry, Johnny, if you’re looking for sympathy, you came to the wrong place.

NFL Football Serves Its Biggest Turkeys On Thanksgiving

Football and Thanksgiving are synonymous in the minds of many sports fans. Can’t see that continuing into the next generation with an annual NFL slate featuring terrible matchups. This year, Bruce Goodell’s boys serve up two of their worst; The Raiders and Lions. Thanks, guys. If you need me, I’ll be watching the Godfather marathon on AMC.

Nets Basketball Fans Don’t Grow In Brooklyn

So, now Nets’ owner Bruce Ratner wins his eminent domain battle to evict homeowners and build his Atlantic Yards empire in Brooklyn. Got news for you, Brucie. Brooklynites aren’t dummies and won’t soon be drawn to that mess you call a basketball team. If you build it, they won’t come unless you can play.

New York Jets Get Defensive With QB Sanchez

If you’re scoring at home, now that Derek Anderson and JaMarcus Russell have been benched, Jets’ QB Mark Sanchez is, officially, the worst starter in the league. And how does Gang Green plan to address this? With Head Coach Rex Ryan, hired on the strength of his defensive expertise, taking a more active role in the rookie’s development. Who knows, maybe Sanchez will be more receptive to a defensive guy seeing as how receptive defenders have been of his passes. However it works out, it’s another example of the Jets not getting it right. Last off season, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer was a candidate for the head job that eventually went to Ryan. Amazingly, they decided to retain Schottenheimer. No team but the Jets would then force an offensive coordinator on a new coach; he’d hire his own guy. That Sanchez has gotten worse as the season has progressed is an indictment of both the Jets and Schottenheimer but, at least, an indication that they got one right in not hiring him to lead the team. Hey, when you’re a Jets fan, you have to take your victories where you can find them.

Notre Dame Football Coach On Way Out

After last week’s loss to Connecticut, it’s a foregone conclusion that Notre Dame will pull the plug on the Charlie Weis era. As they start their search for a replacement, one criterion is more important than any other. They must sign their first choice for the spot. The Notre Dame job was once thought of as the greatest in sports. So much so that Lou Holtz, who coached at a number of schools, always had a clause in his contract that allowed him to leave if the Irish came calling. But, in recent years, that perception has been diminished; much to Notre Dame’s detriment. Bob Davie got the job back in 1996 after Gary Barnett thumbed his nose and headed to Colorado. Before Ty Willingham was brought in, George O’Leary was hired then dismissed due to inaccuracies on his resume. Then, when Willingham flopped, Urban Meyer was thought to be on his way, only to take the job at Florida and leave Notre Dame with second prize once again. Given the fact that Weis is due $18 million on his way out the door, I’m wondering if it isn’t a better idea to keep him on until that Dream Coach is available. It’d certainly be a more productive solution than settling once again.

“Christopher is Well”

About nine years ago, I first met a young man named Chris; at the time, all of eleven years old. He was a quiet, private kid and remains so to this day which is why I’m only using his first name. His dad and I worked together on Wall Street and I convinced John to send Chris to the week-long basketball camp upstate where I was a coach. Every day, during each meal and then again before lights out, I’d check on the kid to make sure things were going well. Always got the same answer. “Yeah, fine.” Nothing more. By the end of the week, one that saw him take home an All Star trophy, I told John that I wasn’t sure Chris had enjoyed the camp. “Of course he did”, John said, “he’s just quiet.”

Chris went on to become a classmate of my son in high school. They were very much alike in many ways and became friends and teammates. They bonded while playing for a JV coach who worked them hard and challenged them every day and they both responded. Each came out of his shell and emerged as a productive player; feeding off the confidence of their coach and their faith in all of their teammates. It was one of those seasons where the record didn’t matter much as all of the young men improved as players and people. They were each given a nickname as well, and one look at Christopher’s winter-white, freckled face instantly gave him away as the one they called, “Irish.”

About a year after Chris left high school as the captain of the varsity basketball team, we learned that doctors had found a mass in his chest. Chris would undergo chemotherapy treatment with an uncertain prognosis. His incredible physical condition, one that had actually masked some symptoms, would allow doctors to aggressively attack the tumor and they started almost immediately. I remember being terrified for Chris, my friend John, their family and even of telling my own son what had happened. I’ll always remember the night we went to visit. Chris was wiped out from a treatment and was actually too weak to even speak. When I entered the room shortly after my son, I was struck to see these two strong, young men, silently holding each other’s hand. I won’t ever forget that image.

Six months later, Chris finished his last treatment and was told there were no longer any signs of the tumor. He showed up at a basketball game at his old school and was mobbed by the many coaches and former classmates so happy that their good friend was doing better. Given his quiet demeanor, it had to be one of the worst moments of his journey. But he tolerated it very well.

It’s been a tough five years or so for a lot of us. I’ve been struggling over the last few weeks to find the spirit of the season and avoid being dragged down emotionally by the difficult times in which I find myself while drawing very little consolation from the fact that I am but one of many going through the same thing. Then I saw the envelope on the table. It was big, like a wedding invitation and my first reaction was dread as an expensive gift is certainly not in the budget. When I opened it, however, my heart was suddenly filled with the happiness of the holiday. It was a note from Chris and his family; updating his condition and thanking all for their support. I had a hard time reading it, however, as my eyes instantly filled up after seeing the first three words: ”Christopher is well.” Happy Thanksgiving.

Was amazed that the play that saw Jaguars' running back Maurice Jones-Drew take a knee on the one yard line instead of scoring the go-ahead touchdown nthat the Jets were conceding with a minute left in the contest was so well received. Jags' coach Jack Del Rio had instructed his star to, essentially, take a dive in order to run down the clock. As if a field gaoal was a sure thing and the possibility of a fumble didn't exist. This would have been a smart play had Jacksonville been up by a point instead of down. But, to pass up a certain score that would put you ahead is as ludicrous as the endorsement the play received from CBS analyst Dan Fouts. Had Jacksonville somehow failed to score, Del Rio would've had a long week.

New York Jets In Familiar Position

It’s Groundhog Day for the Jets as the promise of a 3-0 start has been crushed under the weight of a skid that has seen them lose five of their last six and landed them in their annual, mid-season playoff position; outside looking in. This year’s version of “Same Old Jets” could be a little more interesting than its predecessors, though, as the characters are far more compelling. Trash talking defenders forced to eat their words because of fourth quarter ineptitude, a color blind quarterback preparing post-game cheat notes for the media and the world’s largest crybaby as the leading man. While the swoon is something all too familiar to their fans, it’s a nice gesture by the Jets to, at least, put a new spin on an old, old story.

Does Punishment Fit The Crime?

Cheap Seats regular and Jets’ season ticket holder, Lou Ricciardi, took his son, Bobby, to Sunday’s Jacksonville debacle and I’m wondering how bad young Bob’s transgression had to be that it required such severe punishment.

CBS Sports Puts Stamp of Approval on Bonehead Play

Was amazed that the play that saw Jaguars’ running back Maurice Jones-Drew take a knee on the one yard line instead of scoring the go-ahead touchdown nthat the Jets were conceding with a minute left in the contest was so well received. Jags’ coach Jack Del Rio had instructed his star to, essentially, take a dive in order to run down the clock. As if a field goal was a sure thing and the possibility of a fumble didn’t exist. This would have been a smart play had Jacksonville been up by a point instead of down. But, to pass up a certain score that would put you ahead is as ludicrous as the endorsement the play received from CBS analyst Dan Fouts. Had Jacksonville somehow failed to score, Del Rio would’ve had a long week.

New England Patriots’ Bellichick Still A Little Green

While on the subject of coaching blunders, you’d have to look long and hard to find one with results as disastrous as Bill Bellichick’s Sunday night. Not only did his fourth down gamble hand Peyton Manning the ball just twenty eight yards from a winning score, Belichick also informed his defenders that he has no faith in them. The loss could have serious repercussions come playoff time, especially if it costs New England a home game. When you see a brain cramp like that, you have to wonder if Bellichick stiill suffers some minor effects from his one afternoon as HC of the NYJ.

New York Knicks Mull Signing of Allen Iverson

So now the Knicks are mulling the signing of Allen Iverson which, after ten losses in the first eleven games, seems like a logical, next step as the season becomes the most disastrous in franchise history. Selfish, divisive and not nearly as talented as he once was, Iverson is on the verge of becoming the latest act in Donnie Walsh’s expiring-contract sideshow. Can’t wait for the first time each of Mike D’Antoni’s starters walks on to the court carrying his own ball.

Kelly Tripucka Still An All-Star

Although the Knicks may be completely unwatchable, they’re at least a good listen when Kelly Tripucka is behind the microphone. His expert analysis and delivery are as smooth as the feathery jumper he displayed during his long NBA career; a career still unjustly snubbed by The Basketball Hall of Fame.

New York Mets Hire Wally Backman to Manage Brooklyn Cyclones

I don’t know much about what caused Wally Backman to step down after just three days as Diamondbacks’ manager in 2004 and even less about what he’s done to address those issues since. But I’m positive I don’t get to decide that he doesn’t deserve the second chance given him by the Mets as manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones. I’m also sure that, if Backman does have his life in order, he’s exactly the kind of fiery personality so sorely lacking within the organization.

New York Giants Facing Playoff Elimination

Wasn’t really worried too much about the Giants‘ three game losing streak heading into last Sunday’s game against San Diego. Despite the skid, they were still just a game behind Dallas and Philadelphia with divisional matchups with each remaining on the schedule. While the defense had been suffering ever since Safety Kenny Phillips was lost for the season, talented pass rushers like Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora were certainly talented enough to make the necessary adjustments and, oh yeah, there was still a Super Bowl MVP calling signals. There was every reason to believe the October skein was merely a hiccup. Until the Giants last possession.

Up 17-14 with a little more than two minutes left, Big Blue found itself facing a third and goal situation from the Chargers’ nine yard line and a chance to put the game away. A quick slant to Steve Smith, a fade to Hakeem Nicks or anything else in the book that allows Eli Manning to make a play was certainly in order. In the broadcast booth, Phil Simms was absolutely sure the Jints would pass, because, “You go for the win.” Stunningly, however, head coach Tom Coughlin took that moment to let the football world know exactly what the state of his team is by calling for a nice, safe dive play that netted five yards and a field goal opportunity. The kick produced a 20-14 lead that gave new life to San Diego and its quarterback, Philip Rivers, who took full advantage. Rivers led a beautiful, two-minute drive that gave the Chargers a one point victory and the Giants a lot of questions to answer.

In sports, there is nothing worse than being called a choker. Coming up small in a big situation is an athlete’s greatest sin. Like pornography, choking is something you can’t really define but recognize immediately when you see it. In trying to avoid a loss rather than secure victory, Coughlin not only choked but sent a message to his players that his confidence in them is waning. With a brutal sevn game slate to finish the season, the Giants can forget about a playoff berth if if they don’t believe in each other. Just twenty months removed from a Super Bowl title and four weeks after a 5-0 start, they’re in danger of turning into a middle-of-the-pack team. If that happens, look no further than an early November dive play on third and nine as to when it started.

Knicks Basketball Impossible to Watch

They say the first step in solving a problem is acknowledging that you have one. So, OK, I’ll admit it. I thought I could handle it; thought it wasn’t hurting me; thought I could stop. But I can’t. It’s time for me to come clean. I’ve been watching the Knicks.

I can’t help it. I thought things would get better after Isiah Thomas left town, (Yes, I watched when he was here, too.) Then, when they got rid of Stephon Marbury, I thought my problems were solved. I mean, Head Coach Mike D’Antoni was bringing his up-tempo style to New York while President Donnie Walsh was exorcising almost all of Thomas’ bad contracts. Things had to get better, didn’t they? All I needed to do was hang on for a year and wait for LeBron James to come aboard. On closer examination, however, I’ve discovered I can’t make it.

I played men’s league basketball for over twenty years at St. Pat’s Church in Brooklyn; mostly for the exercise and camaraderie. I had no idea that we were actually building the model used to assemble the current Knicks’ squad. When we had the ball, it was one pass, maybe a second, and a three point shot. When the other guys had it, we simply stood around and waited to get it back. Who knew this intricate system would be the one chosen to carry the Knicks back to respectabilty?

Seriously, this team is such a mess that I can’t imagine any free agent, let alone James, agreeing to sign on. What the Knicks put out on the floor every night is an unwatchable mix of three point shots by bad shooters, a never ending layup line for opponents and twelve guys looking to pad their stats in order to impress potential suitors for a new contract. Since they know the Knicks have no plans for them past this season; I’m not entirely sure that’s something for which they can really be blamed.

It’s scary to think that the Knicks will actually be worse next year if Walsh fails to lure a premier free agent. There will be no help coming in the draft, either, as Utah owns what will surely be New York’s lottery pick; a little parting gift from Isiah. The only consolation then is the one we must hang our hats on now: At least they’re better than the Nets.

Mets’ GM Minaya Looks For Help

Eighty five shopping days until Pitchers and Catchers and the Mets head into the offseason reportedly split on how to patch their M*A*S*H* unit of a roster. Rumors out of CitiField have some of the brass advocating the pursuit of high end free agents with others banking on the health of returning stars and signing second-tier help. Either way, GM Omar Minaya had better get things worked out or this will be his last shopping season in blue and orange.
The Mets desperately need another starter and a big bat in left field. Now, I don’t think it’d be the worst thing to take a pass on sluggers Matt Holliday and Jason Bay as someone like Jermaine Dye would come much cheaper and still help. But to let Angels’ ace John Lackey sign with another team would be a decision from which the Amazins’ would not recover. Lackey brings a Santana-like toughness to the mound and, with Johan, would give the Mets the kind of one-two punch that’s hard to beat in a short series; be it regular season or playoffs. He also possesses a tenacity that hasn’t been seen in the Mets’ dugout for a while. Get the deal done, Omar.

Happy 17th Birthday to my favorite cheerleader and brand new driver, Lindsay Mayrose. Be careful on the roads and always call home.

Yankee Manager Girardi Makes Lemonade

While the World Series title serves as the ultimate vindication for Yankees manager Joe Girardi, I’m still amused by all of the flack he caught in the media for starting A.J. Burnett on short rest in Game 4. What, exactly, were his options? Those who pointed to a three games to one lead as a big enough cushion for Girardi to turn to Chad Gaudin and save A.J. Burnett acted as if starting the $16 million dollar man on three days rest was tantamount to abuse. And what of the ridiculous idea that you can afford to give a game away rather than try to wrap up the title? Burnett’s miserable performance had everything to do with the Phillies getting a second look at him and nothing to do with fatigue. To crticize Girardi for a bad decision is ridiculous. Especially when you realize that he worked his way through three series with just four pitchers on whom he could rely. For $200 million, you’d think he’d have a few more.

Hideki Matsui Wins Series MVP

Have to admit to being slightly amused by Hideki Matsui’s selection as MVP. Not that he was unworthy; just unexpected. While analysts on all fronts spent most of Monday and Tuesday discussing viable candidates for the award, Matsui’s name was never mentioned. Some pointed to Mariano Rivera in the event he saved the clincher, Johnny Damon for his eight hits and whether Chase Utley’s record setting performance would be enough if the Phillies lost. Instead, Matsui stole the show. I guess, that’s why they play the games.

Alex Rodriguez: A True Yankee Yet?

This was after Alex Rodriguez had given the Yankees a first inning lead over the previously unhittable Cliff Lee in Monday’s Game Four. Cheap Seater Frank Marsala wondered how Rodriguez was now regarded by Yankee fans. “Is ARod a true Yankee yet? I’ve always hated that phrase, it’s really stupid.” Stupid, yes, Frank, but the perception, nonetheless. Despite winning two MVP awards in his first four years, Rodriguez has never been embraced by Bombers’ faithful; allegedly due to his continuous failure in the post season. As if all Yankees rise to the occasion in the playoffs. More accurately, fans have kept ARod at arm’s length due to his icy relationship with their poster boy, Derek Jeter. Older fans will remember a similar situation in the seventies when Reggie Jackson was signed. Long before he was crowned Mr. October, Jackson was vilified not only for his feud with beloved manager Billy Martin but for his rant against Thurman Munson, team captain, in which Reggie referred to himself as the “straw that stirs the drink.” Not until that now famous three homer night in the ’77 World Series did Reggie become a fan favorite. So much so, actually, that after returning to Yankee Stadium years later and homering as a member of the Angels, fans serenaded owner George Steinbrenner with an obscene chant for even allowing their hero to sign with California. By then, I guess, Jackson was viewed as a true Yankee.

So, what’s been ARod’s crime? Yes, he did take a swipe at Jeter in a magazine piece a few years ago when he signed with Texas but that was long before he donned pinstripes. It’s not the steroid issue, either, as he had the gorilla on his back for a long time prior to that revelation. Rather, it’s that the fans have followed Jeter’s lead. He has never publicly warmed to the idea of Rodriguez as a teammate so neither have those who worship him. It’s interesting to note that when former Yankee Jeremy Giambi was mired in a year long slump and hearing about it from the stands on a nightly basis, Jeter stepped in and asked that the first baseman be cut a break. However, he has chosen not to whenever ARod has been the target of their wrath. Whatever the reason, lingering anger, resentment or simple dislike, Jeter left ARod to fend for himself when things were bad for the shortstop turned third baseman. Thus, until these playoffs started, Rodriguez has been regarded as an outsider.

Which brings me to this question. If post season success is the barometer for being deemed a “true Yankee”, do we include Luis Sojo but not Don Mattingly? Hmmm. You’re right, Frank. That phrase is really stupid.

Hey ARod. Whattaya Really Think?

There’s no arguing that, given his history, ARod needs to avoid controversy at all costs. But, whenever I hear him give an interview, I’m reminded of the scene in Bull Durham where Crash pulls Nuke aside to work on his cliches.

New York Sports Update

For those of you who’ve had your head under a World Series rock for the last two weeks, let me bring you up to date on the rest of the New York sports scene. The Knicks opened this season the way they finished the last, watching opponents breeze to the basket while shooting the ball as if it was too big for the basket. They’re 1-4 or, as Donnie Walsh would rather you think, five games closer to next summer’s free agent class. The Giants have lost three straight as they’ve suddenly forgotten how to defend the pass and the Jets have lost four of five because, well, they’re the Jets. The Rangers, currently second in the Atlantic division, remain the Garden’s only hope for post season action next spring. And, somewhere in the Dominican Republic, Jose Reyes is still limping. So, enjoy the parade tomorrow. It might be awhile before you see another one.

Last night's Game One starters, Cliff Lee and C.C. Sabathia, stood as monuments to baseball's biggest problem: the disparity in payrolls between small and large market teams. As the last two winners of the AL Cy Young Award, they would have been a huge help to an Indians' staff that featured both until Cleveland couldn't afford either. Much is made in New York about the "Core Four" of Yankee vets, Rivera, Posada, Pettitte and Jeter, all homegrown and together for much of the Yankees incredible run since 1996. What most miss in that analysis is that, unlike many teams, the Yankees could afford to keep all of them once they became stars. Would the Yanks have swept a Twins' team that included Johan Santana and Torii Hunter? Would that Twins team have even won the division if the Royals still had Carlos Beltran and Johnny Damon? The fact is, large market teams don't do anything better than their small market counterparts. They simply make more money because of their location; something baseball needs to address.

After Long Wait, World Series Gets Started

Finally, after what seemed like interminable Division and Championship series, we get to the business of the World Series. Even though these teams seem like mirror images of each other, many have given the Yanks a slight edge due to their advantage in the bullpen. I disagree. Not that Mariano Rivera isn’t better than Brad Lidge; at this point so is Chita Rivera. But the Yankee bats have just rendered two of the top closers in the AL powerless and there’s no reason to believe they won’t do the same to Lidge. In other words, even if the Phillies’ closer was at the top of his game, Charlie Manuel would be making other plans, anyway. What I think it’ll come down to is who starts Game Five for the Bombers. We know Sabathia goes in Games One, Four and Seven but the Yankees don’t want A.J. Burnett to pitch in Philadelphia. If they save him for a Game Six in the Bronx, that’ll not only put an inexperienced starter on the mound, it’ll mean Andy Pettitte goes just once in a seven game series. Still, I like the Yankees in seven.

Major League Baseball Needs a Salary Cap

Last night’s Game One starters, Cliff Lee and C.C. Sabathia, stood as monuments to baseball’s biggest problem: the disparity in payrolls between small and large market teams. As the last two winners of the AL Cy Young Award, they would have been a huge help to an Indians’ staff that featured both until Cleveland couldn’t afford either. Much is made in New York about the “Core Four” of Yankee vets, Rivera, Posada, Pettitte and Jeter, all homegrown and together for much of the Yankees incredible run since 1996. What most miss in that analysis is that, unlike many teams, the Yankees could afford to keep all of them once they became stars. Would the Yanks have swept a Twins’ team that included Johan Santana and Torii Hunter? Would that Twins team have even won the division if the Royals still had Carlos Beltran and Johnny Damon? The fact is, large market teams don’t do anything better than their small market counterparts. They simply make more money because of their location; something baseball needs to address.

NY Jets’ Leon Washington Hurt at Worst Time

Next time you want to come down on an NFL player holding out for a contract extension, think of the Jets’ Leon Washington; on the verge of stardom until a broken leg ended his season. These guys have a very small window to earn their money and each week brings the possibilty of a career-ending injury.

On Bob Griese, Jay-Z and Hypocrisy

ESPN college football analyst, Bob Griese, received a one game suspension from the network for remarks he made last Saturday about NASCAR’s Juan Pablo Montoya. When a Top Five list of drivers was posted, another broadcaster asked where Montoya was. Griese replied, “out having a taco.” For his part, Montoya told reporters after Sunday’s Sprint Cup series race that he “couldn’t resist making fun of the controversy. I could say I just spent the last three hours eating tacos, but I was driving the car.” Montoya said of Griese, “I don’t even know who he is and I don’t really care.” That Griese apologized for the remark twice during the broadcast and ESPN later stated that it considered the matter closed was of no consequence once the PC police got their teeth into it. Bob Griese is and always has been a professional gentleman on the air and it’s a shame that we no longer look at an entire body of work and simply see a good guy who screwed up. Instead, Griese and others like him suddenly and inexplicably become bigots.

I’m wondering how long Griese would have been suspended had he, instead, glorified the rape and murder of prostitutes, African-Americans, homosexuals and police. Didn’t seem to matter much to Major League Baseball or the Yankees last night as they invited rapper Jay-Z to perform before Game 1 of the World Series. In a song whose title is too despicable for print, Jay-Z promotes each of those; something that doesn’t seem to concern the NBA, either; as he’s a part owner of the New Jersey Nets. Just because freedom of speech cuts two ways doesn’t make a double standard less hypocritical.

Is There Life After High School?

I write weekly about college and professional sports because of their high profile and the fact that I just love sports. But, I must confess, despite all of the time spent watching, analyzing and enjoying these televised events, my heart still belongs to the high school athletes. Their spirit is as irresistible as it is inspirational. Whether it be the jubilation experienced by a basketball team winning a championship in the last minute, the despair of senior football players weeping at the realization that they’ve just played their last game together or the apprehension of a cheerleader waiting to step on the mat while praying to avoid a misstep, each emotion is so raw as to take me back to the wonderful time when I felt that way, myself. It’s why I still go to my school’s football and basketball games even though my sons have graduated, why I have my daughter’s competitions circled on the calendar and why I found myself at St. Joseph Hill Academy High School last week for a critical volleyball match with St. Joseph by the Sea.

Seven years ago, the Staten Island Catholic Girls’ High School league was established, with three schools initiating programs and joining two others in their infancy. Sea quickly established itself as the loop’s dominant force while another school, Notre Dame Academy, grabbed last year’s title. This time around, Hill started the season 7-0; a record that featured a big home win over Sea but would later include a loss to their rival in a rematch; sending both teams into last week’s rubber match with identical records. The winner would take the title. Now, the result, (Hill won), is secondary to my point, even though I have to admit , the victory made for a much happier home as my wife, Virginia, is Hill’s fearless leader. As I sat there in a packed, noisy gym watching the Hill girls in the stands screaming their support to their classmates, I was reminded again of why I eat this stuff up. High school is the only sports arena in which the athletes and the fans are bonded by friendship. The fans don’t cheer for love of school but, rather, love of the players; their friends. It is the reason the passion is unmatched. Yes, I know all about the Cameron Crazies at Duke, the Bleacher Bums in Chicago and Cleveland’s Dawg Pound but how many of them studied for a chemistry test with a player the night before a game? How many had a player decorate their locker on a birthday, cry on their shoulder after a failed road test or celebrate the birth of a baby sister? And where else is a coach so concerned with a player’s development as a person?

On the prep level, coaches are not motivated by financial gain. If you ever broke down their stipend to an hourly wage, it would work out to just pennies. Instead, it is the dedication to young men and women that drives so many of them and it is that same dedication that serves as a model for how their impressionable, young players should lead their lives. It is why I am so grateful to the incredible people that have coached my children and a reason I am so proud to say I am my wife’s husband. It’s also why I’ll be sitting courtside this weekend watching the St. Joseph Hill girls volleyball team, Staten Island Champion, take on the other boroughs in the city playoffs in front of a gym full of their close friends. Let me know how Notre Dame does against Washington State.
