Locks Return for 2010 College Slate

CollegeSportsView.com

They’re back.  The Lock family, Gil, his wife Jill and nephew Pad, have agreed to return to CollegeSportsView.com for another stellar season of College Football prognostications.

When we last left the locks, Gil, of Ryno Rife Sports Handicappers, had spent most of the season sullying the family name.  It was for this reason that his wife, Jill, started to submit her own weekly selections, as Gil’s picks had become a source of embarrassment.  Good thing, too, as Jill was a winner two-thirds of the time.  Then, nephew Pad Lock got into the act, helping to bump up the record even further.  Perhaps inspired by their performance, even Gil started to come around by Bowl Season.

So, here they are again, fresh off a 2009 campaign that returned an exceptional 55-45-1 record.  The season kicks off tonight and, true to form, the Locks are all over the Thursday night action. Good luck!! Click here to read more.. »

The Triangle and Two: A Weekly Look at the Ups and Downs of College Basketball

January 30, 2010 under College Basketball, The Triangle and Two

by Terrence Mayrose

Kentucky Basketball Falls From Its perch.  Who’s Next? wildcats_logo

The 75-76’ Indiana Hoosiers can breathe a little easier now that Kentucky, the last remaining unbeaten team this season, has suffered it’s first loss to South Carolina.  Led by an array of tough, clutch, and “how the hell did he hit that” shots from Devan Downey, the Gamecocks made Kentucky’s stay atop the polls very short.

The recent upset of John (“ never actually been to a Final Four”) Calipari, John (“one and done”) Wall and Kentucky as well as the memories of Mario Chalmers trey to beat an undefeated Memphis in 08’ show that even the best of the best can take a loss.  Which makes hoopsters wonder: Will there ever be another undefeated champion ?

Devan Downey dropped thirty in the 68-62 upset, and put himself on the map as one of the nation’s best scorers; although Gamecockdevan_downey faithful will be quick to tell you that he’s no fluke.  The Chester, S.C. native spurned his home state by electing to attend Cincinnati as a freshman. After posting 11.9 ppg in his freshman year,  Downey decided to come home, and it’s been all good since.  After sitting out the ’06-’07 season, Downey’s scored 18.4 ppg (07-08),and 19.8(08-09).  He’s even better this season as Downey’s 22.4 ppg leads the SEC.  With a scorer like this, and a decent record, 12-8 (3-3), The Gamecocks have a shot to be a dark horse in the SEC tournament. After all, they have shown they can play with (and beat) the best.

Now that no unbeatens remain,  who is the  frontrunner for a national title?  With such a crop of great teams atop the polls there may not be just one, but Kansas stands out. Bill Self’s crew is currently 19-1 with their only setback to #14 Tennessee. A January 30th trip to #13 Kansas State, and Feb 8th trip to #6 Texas could yield two wins that would give the Jayhawks the most impressive resume in the country. It should also be noted that Kansas currently ranks 2nd in both Offensive and Defensive Efficiency and you know how much we like that.

Speaking of frontrunners… CBSSports.com’s Gary Parrish points out that the end of January is a great time to find out who will make the Final Four. Parrish stated that in the past five seasons, at least three of the Final Four teams (all four in ’08) have been in the Top Ten during the last week of January. Remember to refer back to this in March when filling out your sheets. Kentucky, Kansas, Villanova, Syracuse, Michigan State, Texas, Georgetown, Duke, West Virginia and Purdue are your current candidates.

Ahead of the Point Spread: Rife With Opinions

September 3, 2009 under College Football, Point Spread
For 2009, we’ll be bringing you the weekly musings and analysis of  ryno rifeCollegeSportsView’s good friend, Mr. Gil Lock of Ryno Rife Sports. Gil is somewhat of a guru in the world of sports handicapping, searching out point spreads that are incorrectly valued and schools with large numbers of returning players that are “good big guys”. He keeps things simple, has a good knowledge of the game and likes to avoid long walks. He’ll let out the leash from time to time on a high risk/reward play but, for the most part, he finds the best method for success is to put the early muscle on your best picks and go from there with the house money.

Thursday
N.C. State – 5 over South Carolina. A revenge game for the Wolfpack after a 34-0 beating at the hands of the Gamecocks to open 2008.  I love Russell Wilson’s athleticism at quarterback and the fact that State has a stud returning at FS, (Javon Walker), who could have a field day against South Carolina, who led the nation in INT’s thrown last year.  The ‘Cocks have an inexperienced QB playing behind an equally green O Line and the game is in Raleigh.

Saturday
Virginia Tech +6 1/2 over Alabama. I love Tech’s QB Tyrod Taylor, who won’t be splitting the position anymore, and I don’t like that “Bama’s QB, Glen McElroy, is a new starter.  In early season matchups between top teams, the defenses are usually ahead of the offenses; making the game come down to special teams.  The Hokies have had the best specials in the nation since Frank Beamer showed up and will use “Beamer Ball” to keep it close.

Oklahoma State -5 1/2 over Georgia- Oklahoma State is just too strong, with QB Zac Robinson and WR Dez Bryant among the best offensive players in the nation.  Georgia must replace two top NFL picks in Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno and travel to Stillwater.  I might actually like the ‘Dawgs if this matchup was later in the season but I think it’s a little too much for them to handle in Week 1.
